After we got through Maytag, Bryan sprints back up to get a video of Ryan's raft going over. They lose someone, but she gets pulled back in in no time. - 140 4067
Bryan stuffs the camera into his PFD for a first-person(ish) perspective of Maytag. - 140 4070

A somber sign. - 140 4065
Debreifing for "Maytag" (guess where the name comes from), the biggest rapid (class "4+") on our trip. It was pretty intimidating, but at this point it was around a corner so we had no reason to be concerned. - 140 4078
The last raft arrives. - 140 4083

Escaping the eddy (hear Doug grunt!) - 140 4032
Surfing. Just after going over a rapid, we paddled hard back to it and sort of lodged the raft in the eddy underneath it. It was fun--it filled up various parts of the raft with water. Kind of a mini version of dangerous eddies on larger rapids. - 140 4041
Crazy balancing tree. - 140 4030

The water, all snow melt, was clear and beautiful. This is gold-rush country, and there are actually still quite a few people who stake claims and dredge enough gold out of the river to make a meager living. - IMG 2947
Did I mention Grand? In spanish grande means big. Aren't the similarities between the languages fascinating? - IMG 2968
There in the middle you can see a windy trail that we took down to the floor of the canyon, to get a better sense of the size of the place. Oh, wait. No. We didn't go down there because it was really fucking hot. That's right. - 140 4031
...and more surfing. - 140 4029
Surfing! - IMG 2972
Obligatory sunset shot. Careful viewers will notice that the sun has been meticulously removed with Photoshop. You can't trust anyone these days. - IMG 2949
It's really these things that remind my that I'm part of a world community, part of a "global village," if you will. - IMG 2967
Again. Flashbacks to day 1. - IMG 3006
Pictures just can't do this place justice. Think thousands and thousands of feet. Hugeness. - 140 4004
We decided perhaps the other boat was not getting wet enough. - IMG 2966
It's cool because there's a tree.
