I had never heard a word of this, but evidently during WW2, the Japanese (who had taken over Thailand and basically everywhere else in Asia) decided they needed a railroad to Burma, so they took some western POWs and a whole lot of Asian laborers and basically worked them to death building the thing. They hacked out this pass with hand drills in something like three weeks. - IMG 6146
